**Now a crowning achievement is teaching ASL to student interpreters this fall (August 2009). After more than 30 years of grassroots ASL education, I am delighted to be in academic environment to work with student interpreters. It is a new ball game for me. I have taught hearing people (medic people, firemen, police and common people with variety of reasons. It is challenging and it is fun! I know it is not easy learning sign language. It all takes your heart and mind to focus on the visual language. If you open up to learning it, you will succeed. Remember that the deaf community do not use the ears. It is a different sensory perception as compared to those who use hearing to do all the stuff. It is a different ballgame for us so we try to educate them to be a fluent signer and be able to perceive what we are saying. The concept of communication is a two way street... you send a message - the other party gets it and responds to you! That is communication!

My favorite and personal quotes are:

"Audism spreads while good Deaf people do nothing!"

"You want to be Deaf or not to be Deaf? That is your choice! I choose to be Deaf and I am happy with
my ASL language, Deaf Culture, Deaf Pride and Deaf Way. I am a survivor in the hearing world."

"ASL is a visual language. It can bridge both worlds! It is actually up to them to cross the bridge to our Deaf world!"

"You have to be Deaf to understand. Similar to walking a mile in my shoes....there is no need to patronize or manipulate us. We are capable of taking care of ourselves. The major obstacle in working world is the attitudinal barriers. When the hearing people refuse to learn ASL and do not show compassion, they have failed to cross the bridge."

"It takes a Deaf village to make a Deaf individual successful! We need to promote and advocate for
social changes. It requires commitment and loyalty to make this process work."

"Hemming and hawing about it will not advance anything."

"It is a serious responsibility and a challenge for every Deaf individual to master the destiny for our Deaf peers."

"Believe in yourself and things will happen!"

My favorite quote from other speakers -

"Tough times never last, tough people do!"

"If you think you can, you CAN!"

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."

Paul Kiel says: I have been oralist and asl user. I have been to both sides of fence - oralist and signer….I wish oral school never existed. I have been exposed to abuses and ignorances. I have grown up naively thinking asl is bad. That was what some teachers told me. ASL is for stupid people. ASL is low class. Don’t do it. It is better to use your voice and speak. Years of practice yields more bullshit! I am trying to “deprogram” myself away from audism and be more advocate for ASL and proud Deaf culture. I may be angry at them for abusing me, but I have learned to move on. I just make my own choices and I decide what is best for me. I would agree with #4 about oralism being a form of audism and part of oppression. It is CONSIDERED a crime against humanity. I was slammed on both hands with a wooden ruler by an angry oral teacher!!! Geez whiz! What is their frigging problem? They were so manipulative and selfish! So damn arrogant about their actions and how they wanted to control deaf children. It is an abuse! Audism spreads when good Deaf people do nothing! This is going on for 126 years! Can we stamp out audism? It is imperative that we take action to reverse the trend! Thanks! Posted on Aboutdeaf.com - December 11, 2006 in response to "Oral Deaf Education Experience"
